Château de Rauzan-Ségla

Pierre Démesure, also known as Pierre de Rauzan, a key player in the wine industry, acquired the noble estate of Gassies in 1661. In 1763, for reasons of succession, the Margalais vineyard was split in two, becoming one with that of Rauzan-Gassies. The estate remained the exclusive property of the Rauzan family for two centuries. The name Rauzan-Ségla was given to the estate in 1816 when Baroness de Ségla, Catherine de Rauzan, took over.

Château de Rauzan-Ségla: the history of the estate

With its wines on the market since the XIXᵉ century, Château de Rauzan-Ségla was already known to outsiders as an exceptional winegrowing terroir. In 1855, Château Rauzan-Ségla was promoted to Second Growth. Several owners followed until the arrival of the Wertheimer family in 1994. Since 1994, massive investments have been made to consolidate its position as a top Cru.

Château de Rauzan-Ségla: an exceptional terroir

The Château de Rauzan-Ségla vineyard covers an area of 71 hectares, with 35-year-old vines. The vineyard has undergone many changes over time, with meticulous tilling of the soil. Similarly, a rigorous study has enabled us to select suitable areas for sustainable cultivation. Château de Rauzan-Ségla benefits from an exceptional terroir of deep, fine gravelly hilltops. The soil also rests on layers of clay and limestone.

The constitution of Rauzan-Ségla wine

To ensure a good harvest, the vineyards of Château de Rauzan-Ségla are planted with a variety of grape varieties. The estate is divided into 1.5% Cabernet Franc, 3.5% Petit Verdot, 35% Merlot and 60% Cabernet Sauvignon. Since 1984, with the arrival of the Wertheimer family, a total commitment to sustainable viticulture has been adopted. Modern methods are also taken into account for purely organic cultivation.

When the grapes are harvested, the bunches are pulled to separate out those whose sanitary state is not in keeping with the estate’s qualities. After this stage, the grapes are gravity-fed, and the wine is aged in barrels for 18 months. The percentage of new oak varies according to the level of the wine. The first wines are aged in barrels for 15 months, with a proportion of 60%. The latter stay three months less than the former, with a proportion of 20%.
