Château Brane-Cantenac did not always bear this name. Indeed, he passed through several masters and each one had given him his patronymic. Thus, in the 18th century, the Hostein family lived there and was succeeded by the Gorce family. The Gorce family produced one of the best vintages of the region when they settled in this domain.
The Brane’s were the next owners of the property. And it is Baron Hector de Brane who gave his letters of nobility to this site and its wines. He is nicknamed the “Napoleon of the vines”. In 1925, the château was bought by the Lurton family, and it was Lucien who managed the vineyards until 1992. Henri Lurton inherited the estate in that year and continues to preserve the terroir and its resources. He is therefore in charge of 75 hectares of vines which are composed of Cabernet Sauvignon at 55%, Merlot at 40%, Cabernet Franc at 4.5% and Carmenere at 0.5%. The ensemble proliferates on deep gravel soils, richly mineralized, and benefits from an excellent natural drainage. Currently, with an eco-responsible aim, the owner is experimenting with organic viticulture on 10 hectares of the land.
Château Brane-Cantenac, an exceptional know-how
Throughout the year, Henri Lurton and those around him treat the vines of the peaceful Château Brane-Cantenac with particular care. In mid-September, however, you will notice a surprising amount of activity. It is, in fact, the harvest period. Before the harvest of the fruits of the annual efforts, an analysis allows to know the quality of the grapes and to know if it is the right time to pick them.
An optical sorting process is then put in place to select the best bunches from the best parcels. This will be followed by steps that require rigor and impeccable hygiene. These include crushing, fermentation, maceration, pressing and finally the placing of the wine in barrels, which will then be placed in the cellar and the length of time they will be aged will be estimated over time by oenology experts. Note that it is generally around 18 months for this château’s vintage.
