History of Château Latour 1994, Pauillac
Located in the Médoc region of Bordeaux, Château Latour 1994 belongs to the
Pauillac appellation. Its history dates back to the 14th century. It's one of the Médoc's oldest vineyards, and also one of the only châteaux to have been owned by the same family for so long: the Ségur family for almost 300 years.
It was only bought out in 1962 by two major British groups, Pearson and then Allied Lyons. The Allied Lyons group encountered several difficulties during the management of Château Latour due to a disorganized management structure. It was sold to François Pinault in 1993. He will give new impetus to Château Latour, both by innovating and by rebuilding. And to improve the wine itself, he appointed Frédéric Engerer as manager, accompanied by his technical team. He also decided to change his business strategy.
In 2009, Château Latour turned to biodynamic agriculture, and in 2015 all the Château Latour vineyards were launched on the road to organic certification, which will be completed in 2018.
Château Latour is one of the wines in the 1855 Grands Crus Classés classification, and belongs to the Premiers Crus. This is the first chateau among the Premiers Grands Crus Classé to produce organic wine.
Grape varieties and characteristics of Château Latour 1994
In the Château Latour vineyard, different grape varieties are grown. The
1994 vintage is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon (75%) and Merlot (20%), with a very small touch of Petit Verdot (1%) and Cabernet Franc (4%).
Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are the main grape varieties of the Bordeaux region. Merlot is known for its sweetness, maturity and elegance. Cabernet Sauvignon brings a more robust, full-bodied, tannic character.
Latour generally produces wines ranging from 12° to 14°; for Château Latour 1994, the alcohol level is 12.5°, offering a deep, well-balanced taste. It has an attractive, dense ruby-red color. It is known for its aromas of black fruit in particular, but also for its woody, smoky character. Earthy aromas are also present.
