Full description

The story of Petrus 1999, Pomerol

The name of the Petrus estate comes from the name of the locality where the land is located. The place is said to bear the name Saint-Pierre. In fact, the labels of Petrus wines feature a representation of Saint Peter holding the keys to paradise. Acquired in 1770, the vineyard was owned for many years by the Arnaud family. At the end of the 19th century, the Pomerol appellation was already famous for Petrus. It was considered the best Pomerol wine after Vieux Château Certan and sold at the level of the Médoc's second growths.

In 1945, Mr Loubat bought the property outright and sold the exclusive marketing rights to Jean-Pierre Moueix. Hand in hand, the two men helped build Petrus' reputation, with prices reaching the level of the Médoc's first great wines. The wine was exported to the United States and became a favorite of the Kennedy family. Petrus does not appear in the Bordeaux rankings, yet he is compared with the best. Petrus is a wine apart.

In 2003, following the death of Jean-Pierre Moueix, his son Jean-François, president of the Duclot trading company, inherited the estate. Recently, 20% of its capital was sold to Colombian investor Alexjandro Santo Domingo, in a deal worth around $200 million.

Grape varieties and characteristics of Petrus 1999

Only one grape variety is grown in the Petrus vineyard, making it an exception in the Bordeaux region. The 1999 Petrus wine is 100% Merlot.

Pomerol's king grape variety is Merlot. It generally represents 80% of the grape varieties, accompanied by Cabernet Franc (15%) and Sauvignon (5%). The red wines are racy, combining "the richness of Burgundy with the finesse and length of the Grands Vins de Bordeaux".

The Petrus estate generally produces wines ranging from 12.5° to 14°. Petrus 1999 has an alcohol level of 13.5°, offering a deep, but by no means opaque, color. On the nose, aromas of dark, woody fruit. On the palate, this 1999 Petrus is medium-bodied but very long-lasting. Slightly rough, the tannins are fairly polished.

Robert Parker score 94/100.

Other Pomerol wines include those from Château Clinet and Château La Conseillante.

We offer other Petrus vintages such as 1959 and 1987.
